Harvard Business School Association of Boston (HBSAB) in conjunction with the MIT Press invite you to join us as scientist, inventor, entrepreneur, and popular MIT Professor Bob Langer delves into the future of innovation with Bob Buderi, MIT Press author of Where Futures Converge:  Kendall Square and the Making of a Global Innovation Hub.

Kendall Square has been called the “most innovative square mile on the planet.”  As a life science hub with a dense concentration of start-ups and leading venture capital firms, it helps fuel the economic engine of our day. Participants will hear fascinating stories from Bob and Bob of great innovations, inventions, and lessons learned, along with their ideas and insights for what is next for Kendall Square, Harvard Square, and the world.

This fireside chat will be held at the Science & Engineering Complex. Refreshments will be served from 6:00pm - 6:45pm before transitioning to the fireside chat.

Professor Bob Langer
Institute Professor | Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Robert Langer is one of 9 Institute Professors at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT); being an Institute Professor is the highest honor that can be awarded to a faculty member. He has written over 1,500 articles, which have been cited over 394,000 times; his h-index of 311 is the highest of any engineer in history and the 2nd highest of any individual in any field. His patents have licensed or sublicensed to over 400 companies; he is a cofounder of a number of companies including Moderna. Dr Langer served as Chairman of the FDA’s Science Board (its highest advisory board) from 1999-2002. His over 220 awards include both the United States National Medal of Science and the United States National Medal of Technology and Innovation (he is one of 3 living individuals to have received both these honors), the Charles Stark Draper Prize (often called the Engineering Nobel Prize), Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering, Albany Medical Center Prize, Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences, Kyoto Prize, Wolf Prize for Chemistry, Millennium Technology Prize, Priestley Medal (highest award of the American Chemical Society), Gairdner Prize, Hoover Medal, Dreyfus Prize in Chemical Sciences, BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge Award in Biomedicine, and the Balzan Prize. He holds 41 honorary doctorates, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, and Northwestern, and has been elected to the National Academy of Medicine, the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Inventors.


Robert Buderi
Author, Journalist, and Entrepreneur

Robert Buderi is an author, journalist, and entrepreneur. In 2007, he founded Xconomy, an online news organization covering the business of technology that was sold to Informa in 2016. Before launching Xconomy, Bob served as Editor in Chief of MIT’s Technology Review magazine and as BusinessWeek's technology editor and was twice a Fellow at MIT.

He is the author of five books about technology and innovation, including The Invention That Changed the World (Simon and Schuster 1996), which told the story of the MIT Radiation Lab and its post-war legacy. His latest book, Where Futures Converge: Kendall Square and the Making of a Global Innovation Hub, was published in May 2022 by MIT Press.

John Carrier is a Senior Lecturer in the System Dynamics Group at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where he specializes in the digital transformation of organizations, with a primary focus on the human equation. He also works to connect companies with key academic laboratories and entrepreneurial ventures in the Kendall Square area.
